DILWORTH SOUP KITCHEN OPENS FOOD PANTRY

The Dilworth Soup Kitchen & Food Pantry this month launched a new initiative offering free groceries every other Wednesday to neighbors in need who have registered to address the food insecurity in their families.

Located in the lower level of the First Christian Church in Dilworth, the new Dilworth Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry is meeting a growing need among our weekly guests.

“Food insecurity is increasingly apparent on the two days every week when the Dilworth Soup Kitchen provides 200 hot, nutritious lunches as well as fresh food and groceries,” said Tom Fedell, chairman of the Dilworth Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry. “We are grateful that with our volunteers and partners we can provide a sense of hope, encouragement and especially, nourishment.”

The Dilworth Soup Kitchen, which celebrates its 15th anniversary on Christmas Eve, changed its name this summer after significantly expanding its focus to provide even more groceries and fresh food to its guests. Amazon, Food Lion, Trader Joe’s and Publix have been the primary providers of fresh food, canned goods and non-perishables for our guests.

Registered guests of the new food pantry are able to receive three days’ worth of food, selecting from a range of proteins, canned vegetables, rice, soup, pasta and sauce, as well as cereal, oat meal and breakfast foods. The food pantry also includes a refrigerator and freezer to provide guests with meats, dairy and other offerings.

The non-profit Dilworth Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry provides hot, nutritious lunches every Monday and Friday from 11 a.m. to noon for up to 200 guests from throughout Charlotte. Lunches are also delivered to nearby Charlotte Housing Authority sites and groups such as Mindful Missions.

Located at the First Christian Church, 1200 East Blvd., the Soup Kitchen has no paid staff and relies on the support of our volunteers, the community and local businesses and individuals.
